The stories of the land

The Great Civil War

The old legends say that the race of men was along with all other races and the world itself created by a mysterious god. He was often called the Phantom god, as there was no real proof that he existed. It is a well-known fact however that he was the original reason for the Great Civil War. Once it happened that a priest named Meliar had a vision, which foretold the coming of a new powerful god to the world of men. This prophecy had terrible repercussions. The kingdom of men divided in two factions. The first one led by Meliar was the one that worshipped the new god. This small yet growing faction believed that the Phantom god would soon be replaced by a more powerful entity. The second one led by a circle of priests tried to turn all men away from Meliar and his blasphemy. But although they tried… They failed.

Meliar and his sect had more and more influence. This forced one of the Phantom god’s priests to commit a murder. He secretly entered Meliar’s cathedral, sneaked into his chambers and killed him during his sleep.

As it usually happens each of Meliar’s priests believed that he was destined to be his masters successor. Internal fights divided the sect into many smaller ones. Each one worshipped a different god and believed that he was the one promised by Meliar. Within years these factions became kingdoms. Each had a separate king, treasury and army. Power  leads to overconfidence and greed. In very short time fights on borders of the kingdoms started. And that was the true beginning of the Great Civil War.

For three generations the armies of various human kingdoms were destroying each other on the fields of Agilander. Kingdoms of men were rising and falling and rising once again. From this great conflict the smallest of all kingdoms emerged triumphant. It was a kingdom not led by a king, but by a circle of priests that still worshipped the ancient Phantom god. These priests believed that it was their destiny to stop this terrifying war by any means necessary. And they were right. They have chosen a king. He was a young boy who could barely lift a sword. For some reason however the priests believed that he was somehow chosen, and was certain to succeed. Fate smiled upon the boy. Within a year his armies have rallied three kingdoms and conquered them entirely. Before the dawn of the year 239 Agilander was once again united. The young king’s name was lost in the depths of history but it is still his dynasty, which rules the world of men. It is called the Ancient Dynasty.

The story of the Mana Age

The Circle of Priests in all it’s wisdom knew that it was imperative to prevent a second civil war. The members of the circle decided to stop the pointless worshipping of the Phantom god and decided to… exchange him. They announced that the world and all life on it have been created not by the sleeping god but by an entity of much greater wisdom and power. And so the circle created a perfect god for all to worship and for all to love. This god they called Salkaravak or the bringer of order in the ancient tongue.

The circle of priests knowing that this god didn’t exist decided that it was pointless to worship him and waste their lives. Instead they called forth an order of Knights which only goal was to defend the world from any blasphemy. These knights were called the Faith Keepers

Then it came to be that the circle of priests seized to exist. They announced that they are not worthy to serve Salkaravak as they did. With their own hands they’ve build an enormous city on the island of Savroth in the middle of the Grand Lake and lived there ever since. They spent years on research and eventually came to a conclusion that Meliars prophecy was correct. A powerful entity did arrive to the world of men. That entity was a god created by their imaginations. That god was Salkaravak. Ironically he was created as a result of Meliar’s prophecy.

The priests deliberated about fate and destiny for many decades. It took them many years to notice that they have mysteriously acquired strange magical powers. It is still unknown if it was caused by the influence of the island or the lake but it is known that for many years the citizens of the priest city were the only ones to posses such powers. With time they learned to use them effectively. Years passed and the old circle of priests changed into an order known as The Magi Council. All that were born on Savroth were trained in the arts of magic and taught by senior magi later called magi masters. The Mana Age begun.

The Elven War

When humans first encountered the race of elves it caused a long and bloody war. It is said that a human patrol entered deep into the Grand Talderian Forest and encountered a group of elves feasting and celebrating on a large field. Without giving it much thought the human soldiers attacked the elves. They quickly fallen however because the elves had powerful advantage in their own forest.

Sometime later the bodies of these soldiers were found by another patrol. The human king Kahdor the Reckless found out about it and quickly sent many men to locate the murderers. The elves were found and when the king was informed about their existence he personally led an army of elite soldiers into the Talderian Forest. More and more elven villages fell to the swords and arrows of men. The elven king whose name is unknown found out that Kahdor had a son who was a pacifist. So one night when the human king was sleeping in a poorly defended camp in the middle of the wilderness the king of the elves sneaked into it and assassinated Kahdor. This not only stopped the advance of the human army by also stopped the entire war. When Kahdor’s son was announced king he quickly ordered all forces to retreat from the Talderian forest. He waited for a few months and started sending diplomats to sign a peace treaty with the elves. They were nowhere to be found though. After several weeks of failed attempts of communication the king ordered all people of Agilander to forget about the elves. It was forbidden to speak about them or tell stories about them to the children. The elves obviously wanted peace and quiet so the young king wanted to make sure they are not disturbed by any of his successors.

The elves were truly forgotten. And were not heard from for many years.

The threat of Orcs

During the greatest human festival a threat to entire Agilander revealed its existence. Exactly at the eve of the year 547 several human cities came under attack by creatures from hell. At least that's what the peasants were saying. The leader of these creatures gathered all captured men after several battles and told them to announce to the world that the Orcish horde will soon rule it.

The battles with the orcs lasted for about a week. At first their armies seemed to have an unlimited amount of warriors, but after some time the number of attackers was greatly reduced. Then king of Agilander Atnor the Bold led his troops and in three battles he annihilated the horde’s main attack force. Human scouts checked both the land and the sky for any sign of the orcs. Despite a continuous search their origin remained unknown.

Dark Mage: The rebellion

King Atnor was long dead but his grandson that wielded his name was proudly ruling Agilander. The alliance with the dwarves forged by his father brought more and more gold to the treasury, strengthened Agilanderian army and expanded it’s borders greatly.

Atnor was visiting the dwarven king Montak the Old when he heard news of an uprising in the city of Eldaria. It was said that a misterious mage has gathered a peasant army that was hastily marching toward Akeanor – the capitol of Agilander. Atnor heard that this dark wizard was planning to overthrow the rule of his dynasty and take the throne himself. Although Akeanor had a large garrison of defenders most of them were currently serving as the king’s personal escort. And so, forced to leave the safety of the mountain stronghold of the dwarves – Kah’darl the king and his knights hurried to fight the honourless usurper…
